Many physicians believe that only certified coders/billers — not physicians — have the requisite education and expertise to code patient encounters. These physicians may hold the coder/billers responsible for the codes billed to insurance carriers.
In truth, physicians ultimately are responsible for choosing which code to use. Physicians are best advised to document patient encounters thoroughly and code the services themselves. However, physicians may work in direct concert with their coders/billers, keeping in mind their advice and direction.
How can you ensure your coding techniques are based on sound decision making? One way is to contact TMA Practice Consulting at (800) 523-8776 or practice.consulting[at]texmed[dot]org. Ask for more information about TMA’s coding training and audits.
