UPDATED: Final rules for the Security requirements of HIPAA (PDF) were published in the Feb. 20, 2003 Federal Register (pp. 8333-8381).
Effective Date: These regulations are effective on April 21, 2003.
Compliance Date: Covered entities (which include physicians that transmit claims or other health care transactions electronically), with the exception of small health plans, must comply with the requirements of this final rule by April 21, 2005. Small health plans must comply with the requirements of the final rule by April 21, 2006.
