Save Medicare Petition Gains Momentum

Another dozen national and state specialty societies have joined TMA's petition drive to "Stop the Medicare Meltdown ." Fifty-one state medical associations and 14 national specialty societies already were on board with our effort. More than 60,000 physicians and patients had signed the petition as of early May.

TMA's goal is a rational payment system that automatically keeps up with the cost of running a practice and is backed by a fair, stable funding formula. The current payment freeze lasts until May 31, and there is still no sign of Congress enacting a permanent solution.

TMA Executive Vice President Louis J. Goodman, PhD, and chief lobbyist Darren Whitehurst met with staff of Republican and Democratic lawmakers recently. They all supported TMA's call for a new Medicare payment system. Many said they have heard from patients and physicians concerned about doctors' ability to stay in practice with the 21-percent Medicare payment cut looming over their heads.
