When Personalities Collide in the Medical Office

When a patient asks to avoid a staff member, honor that request as long as it doesn't jeopardize the quality of patient care or the reasonable management of your office.

When a staff member asks to avoid a certain patient follow these steps:

  • Notify the appropriate member of your management team.
  • Put the details of the conflict in writing if management asks you to (but do not include this document in the patient's medical record).
  • Make all reasonable efforts to reduce the type and frequency of contact between the staff member and the patient.
  • Never accommodate a staff request of this nature at the expense of quality of care or reasonable management of your medical office.
