Physicians who blog, Twitter, or Facebook with their colleagues or patients are invited to attend one of two special sessions on communicating with patients on Friday, May 1, at TexMed 2009. Pediatrician Bryan Vartabedian, MD, of The Woodlands, who blogs on parenting and child health, and Steve Levine, TMA's vice president of communications, will make the presentations.
"Physicians and the Power of Online Social Networks: Tweets, Blogs, and More" will cover the clinical, practice management, and advocacy uses of these social network tools, plus give you tips on how to stay out of legal trouble. Two 90-minute sessions will be held at 10 am and 2:30 pm in Room 14 on the 4th level of the Austin Convention Center.
The sessions are part of a Communications Lab presented by TMA's Medical Student Section, under the direction of Elizabeth Scherer, Texas A&M University College of Medicine; the TMA Resident and Fellow Section, under the direction of Eddie J. Turner Jr., MD, Houston; and the TMA Young Physician Section, under the direction of Brad G. Butler, MD, Longview. Also on the agenda is "Talk So That Others Will Listen," by Austin communications consultant Bel Abel, at 8 am and 1 pm.
The May issue of Texas Medicine will have more information about what physicians need to know to avoid running afoul of state or federal laws in electronic communications with patients. Be sure to read the sobering saga of an ill-fated physician blogger named "Flea."
