Advocacy

Texas is one of the first U.S. states to pass landmark medical liability reforms. These reforms produced better physician access, lower liability insurance rates, and fewer frivolous lawsuit filings. In the public affairs arena, TMA’s grassroots efforts by individual physicians, its more than 47,000 members, and a passion for Texas patients have been the cornerstones of our success since 1853.

At the state and federal capitols, TMA works to:

  • Ensure an adequate health care workforce
  • Protect physicians’ independent medical judgment
  • Promote efficient and effective new models of care
  • Enact health care-friendly public policy
  • Invest in prevention
  • Protect and promote a fair civil justice system
  • Provide appropriate state and federal funding for physician services
  • Assist physicians and their staff manage and reduce payer reimbursement hassles
  • Establish fair, transparent insurance markets for patients, employers, taxpayers, and physicians

In the courts, TMA:

  • Continues lawsuits against the nation’s largest health plans to reduce physicians’ overhead, reduce time spent contesting claims, obtain fair reimbursement, and control medical necessity decision making
  • Files amicus curiae (friend of the court) briefs on medical litigation issues
  • Challenges state licensing boards to protect physicians’ scope of practice
