Victory! SGR Repealed“An immense weight has been lifted from the shoulders of American medicine," TMA President Austin King said April 14 after the U.S. Senate voted 92-8 to repeal Medicare's Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula. The move followed overwhelming approval in the House the previous month and barely averted an SGR-mandated 21-percent cut in physicians' Medicare payments. TMA has fought to kill the SGR for 13 years.

Healthy Vision 2020, Second EditionThe second edition articulates specifically what we are asking of the Texas Legislature, the U.S. Congress, and state and federal regulators. The recommendations range from the simple (Put ICD-10 on permanent hold) to the complex (Devise and enact a system for providing health care to low-income Texans with realistic payment to physicians, less stifling state bureaucracy, and no fraud-and-abuse witch hunts) to the most fundamental (Pass no laws or regulations that interfere with the patient-physician relationship).

TMA-Backed Law Prompts Medicaid Red-Tape ReliefApparently, the state got the message loud and clear: Physicians and patients are overly frustrated with the myriad administrative roadblocks that came along with the expansion of Medicaid managed care in Texas. Thanks to the Texas Medical Association's advocacy during the 2013 legislative session and the successful passage of Senate Bill 1150, relief from red tape may finally be in sight.

TDI Releases Standardized Prior Authorization Forms for Medical Care, DrugsThanks to two of the TMA's 2013 legislative victories, the day has arrived when physicians no longer have to deal with hundreds of different prior authorization forms from multiple payers. Beginning Sept. 1, physicians can use a single, uniform, paper prior authorization form for prescription drug benefits and a similar standardized form for medical and health care services. TDI and health plans must make the forms available in paper form and electronically on their websites.
