      Information and Resources

Physicians can reap many benefits of e-prescribing, such as medication reconciliation, medication history, eligibility, and formulary information. Physicians interested in automating the prescribing process must use an e-prescribing or EMR system certified to connect to the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange, which is operated by SureScripts. Below are links to a variety of information and resources about e-prescribing.
  • 2013 E-prescribing Penalty and Incentive Guidelines

You have until June 30 to avoid a 2-percent penalty on all 2014 Medicare Part B claims. If you do not already e-prescribe in your office, now is the time to begin. If you do not already use an electronic health record (EHR) system with e-prescribing capabilities, you can install a stand-alone e-prescribing system and still meet the approaching deadline.

You must report e-prescribing via claims using G-code G8553 on at least 10 unique Medicare encounters by June 30 to prevent the penalty. Three prescriptions for one patient encounter will count as only one e-prescribing incident.

  • What do I need to know about the Medicare E-Prescribing Incentive Program?

    • The Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA) created an e-prescribing reporting incentive that pays successful electronic prescribers a percent of Medicare billing. For 2009 and 2010, that was 2 percent; for 2011, it was 1 percent; a penalty has started in 2012 for physicians not utilizing electronic prescribing. It is important to note that physicians must report in 2012 to avoid the 2013 penalty! Use the resources below to assist you with the program details and the process.
