TexMed Lobby Day at the Capitol
Thursday, 9:30 am-1 pm
As the 81st Texas Legislature gets underway, the Texas Medical Association is writing legislation to address health insurance reform, access to quality care, physician shortages, an appropriate payment system for Medicaid and CHIP, protection of 2003 liability reforms, Texas’ unhealthy lifestyle epidemic, and others. We invite you to Austin to make your presence known and your voice heard.
Arrive early on Thursday, April 30, and bring your white coat with you! Head to the capitol for a visit to your legislator’s office and deliver your invitation to the TEXPAC/Alliance Reception, be recognized on the House and Senate floor, then join your legislator for lunch on the capitol lawn. Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers
Robert Sapolsky, PhD

Dr. Sapolsky is currently the John A. and Cynthia Fry Gunn Professor at Stanford University, holding joint appointments in several departments, including Biological Sciences, Neurology & Neurological Sciences, and Neurosurgery.
A neuroendocrinologist, his research has focused on issues of stress and neuronal degeneration, as well as on the possibilities of gene therapy strategies for protecting susceptible neurons from disease. Currently, he is working on gene transfer techniques to strengthen neurons against the disabling effects of glucocorticoids. Dr. Sapolsky also spends time annually in Kenya studying a population of wild baboons in order to identify the sources of stress in their environment, and the relationship between personality and patterns of stress-related disease in these animals.
He is the author of Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers: An Updated Guide to Stress, Stress-Related Diseases and Coping (1994), which explores the effects of prolonged stress and its contribution to damaging physical and mental afflictions. His other books include The Trouble with Testosterone: And Other Essays on the Biology of the Human Predicament (1997), Junk Food Monkeys (1997), A Primate’s Memoir (2002) and Monkeyluv: And Other Essays on Our Lives as Animals (2005).
Dr. Sapolsky has received numerous honors and awards for his work, including the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship genius grant in 1987, an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, and the Klingenstein Fellowship in Neuroscience.

Friday, 7-11 pm
You can take the ultimate road trip down America’s most storied highway when you attend TMAF’s spectacular gala: Cruisin’ Along Route 66. This annual fundraiser is an opportunity to have fun with colleagues and friends while supporting TMA’s health improvement programs. Join this year’s honorary chairs Dr. Ernest and Mrs. Sarah Butler, Austin, for an evening that includes a pre-party reception with a raffle and mystery box bidding, plus dinner, music, and entertainment by The Cornell Hurd Band, an Austin favorite.
The annual gala benefits TMAF and the TMA health improvement and science initiatives it funds, including Hard Hats for Little Heads, Be Wise — ImmunizeSM, Excellence in Science Teaching Awards, Minority Scholarship Program, and others. Last year, the gala raised more than $285,000, and with your help, the 2009 gala can generate even more to support TMA’s outreach programs.
Individual tickets start at $150 each, or $175 if you wish to receive additional recognition at the event. Tables will accommodate eight. Nine sponsorship levels are available from $1,750 to $30,000.
