Abstract of Journal Article -- April 2001

By Michael F. Kelley, MD, MPH, and Jane C. Mahlow, DVM, MS

Potential rabies exposures must be evaluated carefully. Physicians should consider the nature of the rabies exposure; species of the animal; behavior of the animal and its availability for testing; circumstances of the exposure; and geographic area and recent experience with rabies in the area.

The Texas Department of Health (TDH) posts the most current protocol for administering postexposure rabies prophylaxis on its Web site.
