The Texas Medical Association (TMA) selected Rep. John Zerwas, MD (R-Richmond), as one of Texas’ best legislators from the 81st legislative session.

“As a physician himself and a member of the Texas House of Representatives, Dr. Zerwas is uniquely positioned to address the challenging and complex health care environment in Texas,” said TMA President William H. Fleming III, MD. “It is his work as champion on behalf of patients that earned him TMA’s Friends of Medicine award.”

Representative Zerwas received the Friends of Medicine award along with 11 other Texas lawmakers at the association’s annual winter meeting in Austin, Texas.

Representative Zerwas currently serves on the House Appropriations Committee as chair of the Health and Human Services Subcommittee, and was a member of the Conference Committee for Senate Bill 1 that made final decisions on the 2010-11 state budget. He also was a member of the House Public Health Committee.

Dr. Fleming added, “During the 2009 legislative session, Representative Zerwas did an outstanding job representing his constituents as well as all Texans. He clearly understood the need for a well-balanced state budget that allowed Texans cost-effective and quality care health care. Several of his bills were signed into law to reform health insurance and improve the state’s health care infrastructure.”

TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing nearly 45,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 120 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
