The Texas Medical Association (TMA) selected Rep. Craig Eiland (D-Galveston) as one of Texas’ best legislators from the 81st legislative session. “Representative Eiland’s staunch support of reasonable and helpful insurance reform earned him TMA’s Friends of Medicine award,” said TMA President William H. Fleming III, MD.
Representative Eiland received the Friends of Medicine award along with 11 other Texas lawmakers at the association’s annual winter meeting in Austin, Texas.
During the 81st legislative session, Representative Eiland was the House sponsor of TMA’s Health Insurance Code of Conduct legislation, and legislation to regulate silent preferred provider organization activity. He also filed important patient protection amendments to the Texas Department of Insurance sunset legislation. He also served as the speaker pro tempore, and was a member of the House Committee on Appropriations. He served on many important appropriations subcommittees as well, including the Stimulus Subcommittee and the Health and Human Services Subcommittee, as well as the Hurricane Subcommittee, which he chaired. He has been a solid champion of medicine as a member of the Committee on Insurance since 1996.
Representative Eiland also was tenacious and effective in passing initiatives to help his constituents recover from Hurricane Ike, and for the restoration of The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing nearly 45,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 120 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
