The Texas Medical Association (TMA) selected Rep. Todd Hunter (R-Corpus Christi) as one of Texas’ best legislators from the 81st legislative session.
“It was Representative Hunter’s friendship, passion, commitment, and determination to champion issues important to quality patient care and organized medicine that earned him TMA’s Friends of Medicine award,” said TMA President William H. Fleming III, MD.
Representative Hunter received the Friends of Medicine award along with 11 other Texas lawmakers at the association’s annual winter meeting in Austin, Texas.
Representative Hunter has been a stout defender and protector of the medical liability reforms Texas passed in 2003. In 2009, he served as chair of the House Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee. In that role he helped lead important efforts to improve Texas’ business climate. His service has been recognized by awards from the Texas Civil Justice League and Texans for Lawsuit Reform, which cited Representative Hunter for his “wise and courageous leadership.”
He also served as a member of the House Insurance Committee and was a key advocate and supporter of TMA’s legislation to make health insurance companies more accountable for their actions.
TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing nearly 45,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 120 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
