The Texas Medical Association (TMA) selected Sen. Robert Deuell, MD (R-Greenville), as one of Texas’ best legislators from the 81st legislative session. “As one of few physicians in the Texas Legislature, Senator Deuell’s leadership and work to educate his colleagues about many of medicine’s legislative priority issues earned him TMA’s Friends of Medicine award,” said TMA President William H. Fleming III, MD.
TMA presented the Friends of Medicine award to Senator Deuell along with 11 other Texas lawmakers at the association’s annual winter meeting in Austin, Texas.
During the 81st legislative session, Senator Deuell passed a measure to ensure that certain families can get medical coverage for their disabled children. He guided his colleagues through priority issues such as health insurance reform, and, as a member of the Sunset Advisory Commission, sought to enact health insurance transparency measures.
Senator Deuell serves on the Senate Finance Committee, the Senate Committee on Natural Resources, and the Senate Committee on Economic Development. He also is vice chair of both the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services and the Senate Committee on State Affairs. Throughout his legislative career, Senator Deuell has passed important pieces of legislation to improve the health of all Texans.
TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing nearly 45,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 120 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
