Adverse Events After an H1N1 Vaccination

Inform your patients that mild side effects after an H1N1 vaccination, such as discomfort at the injection site, or a runny nose, are normal and go away within a day or two. However, if your patients experience more serious side effects, such as difficulty breathing, hoarseness, weakness, or dizziness, tell them to call you immediately or seek care.

Reporting Adverse Events to VAERS
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages you to report any significant events that occur after an H1N1 vaccination of children and adults, even if you are not sure whether the vaccine caused the adverse event. This is especially important if the event resulted in hospitalization, disability, or death. Reporting an adverse event helps the CDC and Federal Drug Administration track information to ensure vaccine safety.

Fill out and submit a Vaccine Adverse Event Report System (VAERS) form (PDF). You can file the report online or request the form by calling (800) 822-7967.

Vaccine Information Sheets
The CDC has developed Vaccine Information Sheets to explain to patients what to watch for.
