| A 1996 W.B. Saunders Company poll estimated that 97 percent of physicians offer some type of professional courtesy in their practices. Due to an upsurge in government's efforts to ensure accurate claim billing, and federal laws addressing physician referral and patient relationships, the legality of this tradition has been called into question. This seminar will take a look at how professional courtesy is defined, the guidelines for its provision, and considerations that must be made to steer clear of potential fraud liability. |

Your Speaker
Sarah Fontenot, BSN, JD, specializes in health law and has been involved in medico-legal issues for 17 years. Ms. Fontenot taught hospital law and public health law in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale Medical School for two years, and has been an adjunct faculty member at Trinity University in San Antonio since 1997. She was selected Most Outstanding Professor by the Trinity Executive MHA Class of 2000. Ms. Fontenot teaches extensively for the Southern Medical Association, American College of Physician Executives, and American College of Healthcare Executives, and other provider groups, including Medical Group Management Association. She has been teaching programs for TMA since 1998.
Continuing Medical Education
The Texas Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. TMA designates each educational activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Each activity has been designated as 1 hour of ethics and/or professional responsibility education.
Liability Insurance Discount
 Physicians who are insured with Texas Medical Liability Trust may earn professional liability insurance discounts by participating in approved continuing education activities. TMLT policyholders who listen to a combination of three web seminars will earn a 3-percent discount (not to exceed $1,000), which will be applied to their next eligible policy period. (Eligible Web seminars are Patient-Physician Relationship, Professional Courtesy, and Medical Records - Consent for Treatment of a Minor)
