New, revised, and invalid diagnosis and procedure codes take effect Oct. 1, 2009. Among the changes, many of which pertain to new E codes, the 2010 ICD-9 code update expands code category 488 to add two new codes:
- 488.0 (Influenza due to identified avian influenza virus)
- 488.1 (Influenza due to identified novel H1N1 influenza virus)
Coders and others can reference an ICD-9-CM code conversion table (PDF) to track the changes. You also can check your specialty society or health plan Web sites for details.
Changes relevant to the Texas Medicaid and the Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) Services Program will be on the Texas Medicaid & Healthcare Partnership (TMHP) Web site beginning Oct. 1, and also will be published in the January/February 2010 Texas Medicaid Bulletin, No. 227, and in the February 2010 CSHCN Services Program Provider Bulletin, No. 73.
