More than 1,100 physicians, TMA Alliance members, and medical students came to Austin this year to take part in the First Tuesdays at the Capitol program to push for passage of Doctor's Orders, TMA's legislative agenda. The 1,117 participants were 120 more than in any previous legislative session.
Fifty-five of them registered for all four First Tuesdays.
TMA President William H. Fleming III, MD, praised all of the physicians, alliance members, and students for participating in First Tuesdays, and said he is particularly impressed by those who took part in all four. "First Tuesdays demonstrate what our grassroots political activism is all about," he said. "The men and women who are willing to leave their practices, or their homes or businesses, or their classrooms and come to Austin to speak for doctors and their patients show that they truly are dedicated to our mission of improving the health of all Texans. I know they made a difference at the capitol this year, and I'm confident they will be back again in 2011."
