The more physically fit a middle school student is, the better he or she scores on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test, a student at The University of Texas School of Public Health has found.
The study by Duncan Van Dusen, a student in the master of public health program, shows that during 2007-08, TAKS scores were significantly higher for those students with higher fitness levels. The difference between most fit and least fit is 20 to 110 TAKS points, he says.
The study is further evidence why TMA supports legislation increasing the physical education requirement for middle school students.
