Ike Relief Fund Deadline Looms

March 16 is the deadline for physicians to apply for financial help to rebuild their practices damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Ike.

You may complete the applications to the Hurricane Ike Disaster Relief Fund on the TMA Web site or fill out and mail the PDF version of the form. (Need help with PDFs?) Physicians who practice in a Hurricane Ike federally designated disaster area are eligible to apply. Additional guidelines and a timetable for evaluating applications and awarding grants also are on the TMA Web site.

"The program's purpose is to reestablish the delivery of medical care to the hardest-hit areas of Texas by providing physicians in need with financial assistance," said TMA House of Delegates Speaker Stephen L. Brotherton, MD, chair of the Disaster Relief Fund. "Grants are available if your practice incurred uninsured or nonreimbursable property damage and you do not have adequate funding to cover the damage."

The program is nearing its $1 million goal. A generous $500,000 donation from the Physicians' Foundation has been bolstered by additional contributions from UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, the Texas Medical Liability Trust, the TMA Insurance Trust, Humana, the American Medical Association, the Okefenokee County Medical Society (Georgia), the Williamson County Medical Alliance, and the Louisiana State Medical Society.

If you have questions or need help completing the application, e-mail Gail Schatte at TMA or call her at (800) 880-1300, ext. 1600, or (512) 370-1600.
