More money for Medicaid, additional funding for programs for the uninsured, and an investment in health information technology are included in President Barack Obama's $819 billion economic stimulus package the U.S. House of Representatives passed Jan. 28. The bill originally called for $825 billion in spending but dropped to $819 million when funding for family planning services and other projects were removed.
The legislation needs Senate approval. The Senate is expected to vote on the package this week. The New York Times reported that the Senate version may include adjusting the alternative minimum tax to hold taxes for many middle-class Americans. That would raise the package's total to almost $900 billion, the Times said.
