Medco Changes Drug Policy

Medco is notifying Texas Health Insurance Risk Pool patients that as of Jan. 1, certain specialty medications previously obtained directly from a specialty pharmacy, a home infusion company, or their doctor's office will be covered only if they order them through Accredo, Medco's specialty pharmacy.

Patients who obtain medications elsewhere may have to pay the full cost themselves, a Medco letter to patients says, adding that the change does not affect medications supplied during hospital inpatient treatment. The letter instructs patients on how they can sign up for Accredo themselves or obtain assistance from their physician. Medco says patients can give their physician their identification number and ask him or her to call Accredo. The letter also lists the medications affected.

The risk pool, which insures patients who cannot find health insurance because of a preexisting medical condition, selected Medco to provide its policyholders with specialty medications and manage their prescription drug benefits.
