TMA's unscientific poll has produced some interesting results so far: With 615 TMA and TMA Alliance members responding, Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin lead Democrats Barack Obama and Joe Biden by a 52-41 margin. From a health care perspective, though, Senator Obama's position is determining where respondents stand. Among the Obama supporters, 72 percent say they took their stance because they like his health care platform. Almost 80 percent of the McCain backers, however, say they are more persuaded by how much they dislike the Obama position.
The economy is the No. 1 issue among all respondents. McCain-Palin supporters rank health care second and the war in Iraq and Afghanistan third; backers of the Democratic ticket put the war second and health care third.
If you haven't taken the poll yet, you may complete it online. The cover story in October's Texas Medicine examines the presidential candidates' health care positions. We also have a comprehensive comparison online.
Tune in to Podcast TMA for the latest Texas Medicine installment. Senior Editor Ken Ortolon interviews American Medical Association President-Elect Jim Rohack, MD, and Roland Goertz, MD, a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians Board of Trustees, about the Obama and McCain health care reform plans. They discuss how the candidates' plans contrast and the prospects for major reform in the next congressional sessions. You can subscribe to Podcast TMA for free via iTunes.
