Help your patients quit smoking by taking either of two continuing medical education (CME) courses offered by TMA.
"Tobacco Intervention and the Healthcare Provider" [PDF], a free, online module and self-assessment, teaches you five steps of smoking cessation interventions, discusses various pharmacotherapies for smoking cessation, and provides tips for motivational interviewing. This program is offered through TMA's Physician Oncology Education Program (POEP). You will receive 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
"Effective Strategies for Smoking Cessation" helps physicians of all specialties identify strategies to help patients stop smoking, discusses special populations and comorbidities, and provides resources for physician and patient use. This program is designated for 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ and is offered by TMA's Committee on Physician Health and Rehabilitation. Cost for this seminar is $15 for TMA members and $20 for nonmembers.
TMA's POEP also has free smoking cessation pocket guides for physicians. The guides offer a quick reference on the latest information about cessation counseling and pharmacotherapies. To order your pocket guides, e-mail POEP or call (512) 370-1673.
The American Medical Association has a new online video with a smoking cessation component. "Connecting Patients to Community Resources" provides physicians an overview of available community resources – for smoking cessation, reducing risky drinking, eating healthier, and increasing physical activity – to help patients improve their health behaviors. The video is the latest episode in the AMA's Educating Physicians on Controversies and Challenges in Health series.
