TMA Helps Physicians Recover From Ike

Keywords: Public_Health

With as many as 1,000 Gulf Coast area physicians needing help to pay for uncovered losses caused by Hurricane Ike, the Texas Medical Association and the TMA Foundation are trying to raise $1 million to help them get back on their feet.

TMA's Hurricane Ike Disaster Relief Program, bolstered by a generous $500,000 donation from the Physicians' Foundations for Health Systems Excellence, is raising funds to help physicians restore their practices and resume treating patients as quickly as possible. TMA hopes to announce details and put out applications within the next two weeks.

Thus far, TMA also has received donations from:

  • UnitedHealthcare, $100,000;
  • Texas Medical Liability Trust, $50,000; and
  • Humana, $25,000.

If you or your organization want to help out, contact TMA Executive Vice President/Chief Executive Officer Louis J. Goodman, PhD or go to the TMA Foundation Web page.
