TMA Help for UTMB Residents and Students Needing Temporary Relocation Housing Assistance

Problem:
TMA has heard from UTMB resident and student members who were impacted by Hurricane Ike.

We understand that UTMB has moved quickly to take care of resident training needs by relocating residents to programs across the state. However, some residents still need temporary housing assistance. UTMB had a few offers of assistance and tried to match UTMB graduates willing to offer assistance. Some of the faculty offered their personal home, and some residents contacted their new institutions for help.

The TMA Medical Student Section proactively moved to help out their colleagues from UTMB. Because so many of the students use Facebook – and use it regularly – the MSS established a housing-match program on Facebook. Students may visit Facebook to request or offer housing (account required to post). Students who need additional assistance may contact Christina Shepherd at (800) 880-1300 ext. 1443 or e-mail Christina Shepherd. Christina is closely monitoring the Facebook page to see what additional help is needed.

Solution:
TMA and the county medical societies are coordinating efforts to match UTMB residents in need of temporary housing with willing TMA physician and alliance members. UTMB residents will be in their new training programs for approximately 4-6 weeks (eight weeks maximum). Most reported for work on Monday, September 29th, but the start date was flexible depending on their home living situation. Baylor residents will not start until Oct. 6 or Oct 15.

Below is a list of the institutions, city, and number of residents relocating.  There are about 100 others training at UTMB satellite locations or private practices throughout the state. Note: Some residents were given the opportunity to relocate to a training program where they had family or friends with whom to stay. In Houston, the size of the city, long commutes, and proximity to public transportation have residents looking for more options. (FEMA hotels are far from the medical center and many residents lost their cars as well as homes).
