The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) Technical Advisory Group has made its final report [PDF] to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Michael Leavitt. HHS established the group to examine EMTALA's impact on medical care.
Among the issues examined in the report were what constitutes appropriate on-call service by a hospital and what should be required of individual physicians, whether specialty hospitals have different EMTALA obligations from other hospitals, the duties of transferring and receiving hospitals, and whether EMTALA is enforced fairly across the country.
McAllen obstetrician-gynecologist James L. Biddle, MD, was a member of the committee.
