TMLT Offers Medical Student Scholarships

The Texas Medical Liability Trust (TMLT) is again offering its TMLT Memorial Scholarships to medical student scholarships in 2008. One student at each Texas medical school will receive a $5,000 scholarship. Recipients are chosen based on their financial need and their ability to evaluate the patient safety concerns in a closed claim study and communicate their recommendations in an essay.

To be eligible, applicants must be:

·          Entering their third or fourth year of study at a Texas medical school in the fall of 2008;

·          In good academic standing;

·          Able to demonstrate financial need;

·          Able to communicate a commitment to patient safety and medical risk management through an essay; and

·          A current student member of (or have a student application pending with) the Texas Medical Association.

To apply, students should submit:

·          A completed application (incomplete applications will not be considered);

·          An official medical school transcript; and

·          A short essay (no more than 500 words) describing the risk management considerations for a closed claim study.

June 9 is the deadline to apply for the scholarship. Applications are available on the TMLT Web site. Entries are judged by the TMLT Board of Governors, which is composed of nine Texas physicians. The winners will be announced in September.

If you have any questions, or if you would like to request scholarship materials to pass out to students at any of your upcoming meetings, e-mail Laura Brockway or call her at (800) 580-8658, ext. 5936.
