Some Lenders Ignoring 20/220 Reinstatement

Even though the U.S. Department of Education has temporarily reinstated the "20/220 pathway" economic hardship loan deferment option that Congress eliminated in September, the American Medical Association says several residents have reported that some lenders and loan servicing companies are not recognizing the deferment.

The 20/220 pathway allows many resident physicians to defer repayment of medical educational loans until after the completion of residency training. The pathway was temporarily been reinstated through fall of 2008, and U.S. Senators Richard Burr (R-N.C.), and Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) recently proposed legislation to reinstate the pathway permanently.

AMA asks residents to notify its Resident and Fellow Section if they encounter a financial institution that is not recognizing the reinstatement. Include your name and telephone number, and the name and telephone number of the financial institution that denied your request. AMA says it will alert federal education officials.
