State to Feds: Our Rx Pads Ok for Now

Thanks to persistent hard work by TMA, Texas Health and Human Services Commissioner Albert Hawkins decided Texas (PDF ) physicians don’t need to make any changes in prescription pads used for Medicaid patients on Oct. 1.

On that date, a new federal law requires physicians to use tamper-proof prescription pads for all written prescriptions for Medicaid beneficiaries for any drug. Noting he “recognizes and acknowledges the complexity and burden” of this change to physicians and providers, Commissioner Hawkins said the state is working with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services “to determine when and how to implement” this new requirement.

TMA thanks Commissioner Hawkins and his staff for listening to physicians’ concerns on this issue.
