- WHAT: More than 200 physicians, medical students, and TMA Alliance members
from across Texas will fill the Capitol to urge legislators to back
laws that protect patients’ access to care, preserve
public health, and more during the Texas Medical Association’s (TMA’s) initial
First Tuesdays at the Capitol advocacy
day.
- WHEN: Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 8 am
(and much of the day)
- WHERE: State Capitol and
Capitol Extension (preassembly at the TMA building, 401 W. 15th St., Austin)
- WHO: TMA physicians,
medical students, and TMA Alliance members (volunteers who are physicians
and/or spouses of TMA physicians) from across Texas
- WHY: TMA physicians urge
legislators to follow TMA’s recommendations to improve the health
of all Texans by protecting low-income Texans’ access to medical care;
maintaining a strong yet fair Texas Medical Board; protecting public health
programs to defend Texans from threats; requiring a consistent standard of care
for telemedicine the same as for traditional doctor visits; and protecting
patients from insurers’ tactics leading to surprise bills. TMA First Tuesdays
participants will ask legislators to support these and several other issues to
preserve patient care. TMA First Tuesdays events also take place on March 7, April
4, and May 2.
TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation,
representing more than 50,000 physician and medical student members. It is
located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the
state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
