All physicians under the age of 40 or in their first eight years of practice are considered "young physicians." With your TMA physician membership, you are included in the TMA Young Physician Section (YPS) and are encouraged to participate in its activities and meetings.
The YPS provides a means for physicians under the age of 40 or in their first eight years of practice to participate in activities and programs relevant to the physician just entering practice. The section provides input into TMA policy through direct access and representation in the House of Delegates.

New Program! TMA Leadership College
TMA will launch the new TMA Leadership College at Fall Conference, October 14-17, 2010. This intensive program is designed to identify, train, and build young TMA member physicians into leaders at the state and local levels. This program is for active TMA member physicians in their first eight years of practice or under the age of 40. Loan Application Deadline Extended
The Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is giving some physicians more time to apply for help in repaying their medical school loans under the Physician Education Loan Repayment Program. Physicians are eligible for up to $160,000 over four years.
Physicians who provide primary medical and mental health care services in designated medical and mental health provider shortage areas now have until June 15 to apply. The original deadline was April 1.
Jim Conditt, recruitment and retention administrator for the DSHS Primary Care Office, says officials extended the deadline because only 77 physicians had applied. He says officials were anticipating between 175 and 225 applications.
July 1 is the deadline to apply for funds under the Children's Medicaid Loan Repayment Program. It offers up to $140,000 over four years in loan repayment help to physicians who treat children on Medicaid.

Michael O'Malley, MD Memorial Scholarship
In 2007, the YPS Rural Scholarship was transformed into a memorial scholarship for Michael O’Malley, MD. Dr. O’Malley, a recipient of a similar scholarship himself, was an internal medicine physician in Galveston and past chair of the TMA Young Physician Section. Tragically, Dr. O’Malley died from cardiac arrest in his home at the age of 43 and left a wife and two young children. In his memory, the young physicians’ are continuing the tradition of helping rural high school seniors pursue a degree in the field of medicine.
To ensure the continued work of this scholarship, make a donation.
