Local Event Celebrates Second Anniversary
Oct. 7, 2014
Round Rock physician Susan Pike, MD, encourages Williamson
County residents to lace up their walking shoes and join her Saturday, Oct. 11, for Georgetown’s monthly Walk With a Doc event. The walk takes place at San Gabriel Park in Georgetown at 9 am. This month marks Dr. Pike’s
second anniversary sponsoring Walk With a Doc events.
The Walk with a Doc concept is simple: Physicians organize
walks in their communities and invite their patients and their patients’
families to join them. Walk With a Doc
is overseen by a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage
healthy physical activity in people of all ages, and reverse the consequences
of a sedentary life in order to
improve people’s health and well-being.
After two years of helping patients and Georgetown citizens
take “ ‘actual’ steps toward improving their health and fitness,” Dr. Pike reports
she’s seen great results.
“I come away after each walk feeling energized, positive,
and that I have touched someone’s life in a way I cannot otherwise do in my
office,” said Dr. Pike. “I have seen Walk With a Doc grow from groups of 10 to
consistent groups of more than 40 walkers over the last two years. It is very
satisfying to talk to people in my community about the program and hear them
say, ‘Yeah, we’ve heard of that, how can we get involved?’
“The program isn’t about just weight loss or exercise,” Dr.
Pike adds. “It’s about moving more, eating better, and learning about simple
things we can do that can influence our health positively. These are the types
of changes people can embrace that can lead to success.”
At each monthly walk, Dr. Pike addresses a different health
topic and answers questions. This month’s walk focuses on breast cancer
awareness and will feature a guest speaker, Cassie Connerty, physician
assistant at Baylor Scott and White Round Rock Breast Care Clinic.
This is a FREE program, and preregistration is not required.
Future walks will be announced via the Walk With a Doc website.
