TMA Offers August Vaccinations, Bike Helmet Giveaways

Events to Improve the Health of Texans in Local Communities

July 31, 2014

WHAT: Texas doctors are offering vaccination clinics and bike helmet giveaways this month to help patients prevent disease and injuries. The Texas Medical Association (TMA) provides vaccination clinics for children, adolescents, adults, plus bike helmet giveaways for children.

Vaccination clinics: TMA physicians and other volunteers will bring vaccinations clinics to seven communities across Texas this August, which is National Immunization Awareness Month. Families can make sure kids’ vaccinations are up to date for school and other family members are protected from disease. More than 255,000 Texans have received vaccinations through TMA’s Be Wise ― ImmunizeSM program since the program began in 2004. Vaccines protect against disease and can potentially save lives.

These Be Wise clinics will offer a variety of vaccinations, including meningococcal vaccination required by Texas law for college admission. Availability and payment varies by clinic location; check with the local event sponsors for details about what they will offer.

Hard Hats for Little Heads events: TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads program offers 13 helmet giveaways this month. Hard Hats for Little Heads promotes safe exercise and encourages helmet use for sports on wheels: biking, inline skating, skateboarding, and riding a scooter. During 2014, TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads program is celebrating its 20th year of keeping kids safe. In that time, TMA members have given away more than 175,000 helmets and plan to give away 34,000 free helmets in 2014. Studies have shown properly worn bike helmets can prevent up to 85 percent of brain injuries.

WHEN: Aug. 1-Aug. 29

WHERE: Your community and others across the state (see schedule below)

WHO: TMA physicians, medical students, TMA Alliance members (TMA physician volunteers and TMA members’ spouses), county medical societies (CMSs), and community partners … benefiting children and adults in communities across Texas!
