Can Your Office Staff Speak ACA?

Are your office staff members who answer phones and talk to patients equipped to answer patients' basic questions about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance marketplace? TMA's "Hey, Doc" education campaign provides objective, nonpartisan answers to lots of questions your patients might ask.

"Hey, Doc" also provides handouts (PDFs) you can print out and give your patients. Find these at HeyDoc.texmed.org:

You also might create a custom handout that lists local community health centers that help with enrollment and local ACA marketplace navigators, along with these important dates:

 If you sign up and
pay for insurance.........................Your coverage begins

Feb. 1-15...................................... March 1
Feb. 16-28.................................... April 1
March 1-15................................... April 1
March 16-31................................. May 1

Also include the address of the federal government website where patients can enroll in an ACA health plan  Healthcare.gov or www.cuidadodesalud.gov  and the federal government's marketplace hotline, (800) 318-2596, where help is available in many languages.

A glossary (PDF) of health care coverage terms the U.S. Department of Labor created for consumers makes another useful handout.

TMA answers questions from physicians about the ACA, too. See the TMA Affordable Care Act Resource Center and our Q&A (Updated: December 2014 MembersOnlyRedfor Texas physicians about the ACA exchange plans.
