Temple Volunteer Elected TMA Alliance President

May 18, 2013

The Texas Medical Association Alliance (TMAA) has elected Cheryl Stanley Jones, Temple, as its 96th president. TMAA is the volunteer service organization of the Texas Medical Association (TMA), comprising physicians and physicians’ spouses. She is married to Russell Jones, MD, a TMA member and Temple emergency physician.

“I’m pleased to be chosen to lead an organization that links the physicians of Texas with their communities,” says Mrs. Jones. “While physicians are busy caring for patients, the TMA Alliance is working to make Texas communities a healthier place to live through our volunteer efforts.”

The alliance supports TMA’s public health programs: Be Wise — ImmunizeSM, a program dedicated to improving Texas’ immunization rates, and the Hard Hats for Little Heads bicycle helmet giveaway program. TMAA also is active in grassroots advocacy, spearheading First Tuesdays at the Capitol, where physicians, medical students, and TMA Alliance members meet with their state legislators monthly during each legislative session to ensure laws are passed that improve Texas’ health care system.

Mrs. Jones joined the TMA Alliance when her husband began medical school at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. She has served as vice president of the TMAA councils on Community Health and Well-Being, Public Communication, and Membership. She also has served as TMAA parliamentarian and District 12 Director. Mrs. Jones has represented the alliance on TMA’s Council on Health Promotion, which oversees TMA’s public health outreach initiatives.

As president, Mrs. Jones’ goal is to grow the alliance membership and its outreach and advocacy programs. “TMA Alliance understands the value of membership,” says Mrs. Jones, “especially as we partner with TMA to navigate the twists and turns of health care delivery to patients in Texas.”

Mrs. Jones brings more than 20 years of volunteer experience to her presidency. She currently chairs the Temple Education Foundation and has been a member of its Scholarship and Grant committees. She also has held various volunteer positions with the Temple Independent School District (ISD), including serving on the Temple ISD Mentor Committee and as a mentor.
Mrs. Jones is a member of the Junior League of Temple, the Central Texas Orchestral Society, and First Baptist Church of Temple. She is an executive board member of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

Mrs. Jones and her husband have two children: Rory, currently in Germany on a Fulbright Scholarship, and Abby, a student at Texas A&M University.

TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 47,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 112 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.

Be Wise — Immunize is a service mark of the Texas Medical Association.
