Justin Berk, MPH, MBA, a second-year medical student at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC)-Lubbock, received the Texas Medical Association Medical Student Section (TMA-MSS) Student of the Year Award. He received the award today at TMA’s annual conference in San Antonio.
Since 1998, TMA-MSS has recognized an outstanding student member who excels in furthering the section’s goals and policies for a better Texas.
“I’m humbled and honored to receive the award and hope to continue to make contributions to my community and profession,” said Berk. “I am grateful for the guidance and leadership opportunities provided by TMA.”
Berk has made his mark on campus and in the community. He has been student director of the Lubbock Impact/TTUHSC Free Clinic, where medical students work alongside physicians to provide medical care to the city’s uninsured population.
Berk has been vice president of the TMA student chapter at Texas Tech and has been a member of the Lubbock-Crosby-Garza County Medical Society Public Health Committee. This spring, he was one of 20 students across the nation who received the AMA Foundation Excellence in Medicine Leadership Award.
As a volunteer deputy voter registrar, Berk registered more than 100 student voters for the 2012 election. He also recruited students to advocate to keep the Lubbock Health Department open when it was under threat of closure.
TTUHSC student Brittany Rosales, who nominated Berk for the award, said, “Justin is a champion of local health care needs, a mentor to other students, and integral member of our local TMA chapter.”
Berk received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his MPH from Yale University School of Public Health. He received his MBA from Texas Tech Rawls College of Business. While at Yale, Berk incorporated and directed AIDS Walk New Haven Inc.
