TMA to Give Away More Than 1,800 Bicycle Helmets in May

 May 1, 2013

  • WHAT: To protect children from head injuries and encourage fitness, the Texas Medical Association’s (TMA’s) Hard Hats for Little Heads program will give away more than 1,800 bicycle helmets in May, during Bike Month.
  • WHEN: May 2-23, 2013
  • WHERE: Communities statewide, including yours (see schedule below)
  • WHO: TMA physicians, medical students, TMA Alliance members (volunteers who are TMA physicians and TMA members’ spouses), and county medical societies

Texas physicians want to ensure Texas children are doing all they can to stay safe. Wearing a bicycle helmet, and wearing it correctly, is a simple way to prevent injury. Head injury is the most common cause of death and serious disability from bike crashes.
Throughout May, which is designated as Bike Month, TMA physicians and other volunteers will give Texas children free bicycle helmets at giveaway events across the state. Parents and children also will learn about the importance of wearing a helmet, especially one that fits properly.
TMA physicians encourage children to wear the correct helmet for every wheeled sport, including biking, skateboarding, inline skating, and when riding a scooter. Children also are encouraged to ride their bikes as often as possible to stay fit and healthy.

Since the program began, physicians and their families have given away more than 145,000 helmets to Texas children.

TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 47,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 112 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
