TMA Statement: Feb. 11, 2013
Please attribute the following to Texas Medical Association President Michael E. Speer, MD. Dr. Speer issued this statement in response to the House Appropriations Committee’s unanimous vote this morning to approve a $4.5 billion emergency appropriations bill to fund the Texas Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program for the final four months of fiscal year 2013.
“The physicians of Texas applaud the House Appropriations Committee and Chairman Pitts for their swift and unanimous action today in approving the bill that will finance the Texas Medicaid program for the rest of this fiscal year. This is the first step in paying an IOU our legislators took out when they wrote the budget in 2011. Now, that IOU is due. We urge the full House and then the Senate to pass this bill ASAP and get it to the governor’s desk for his signature. Texas physicians, hospitals, and Medicaid providers rightfully expect to be paid for the health care services they will provide to Texans in May, June, July, and August.”
TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 47,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 120 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
