83rd Texas Legislature Testimonies and Letters

TMA is hard at work guiding health care policy through the Texas Legislature. House and Senate committee chairs are holding legislative hearings on dramatic budget cuts, physician employment, expansion of scope, and a myriad of public health issues. At each hearing, TMA has a physician leader present to ensure legislators understand our position and act in the best interest of patients. We are also presenting a variety of letters to state lawmakers.

Regarding SB 5/HB 60: I recently heard a radio news story stating that the TMA supports allowing access to abortion at 20 weeks. I have read the TMA Comments letter signed by Dr. Brotherton on June 23, 2013. Though I appreciate his representation of our interests, I feel that TMA could do more to make clear a stance on this legislation. Either make it clear that TMA physicians are intentionally not taking a stand on abortion per se or be frank and take a stand. I am pro-life and I am not pleased that TMA is positioned in a manner lending itself to being portrayed as pro-choice.
