Texas Physicians to Give Immunizations, Bike Helmets

  • WHAT:Texas doctors are offering vaccination clinics and bike helmet giveaways for children this month. The Texas Medical Association (TMA) provides vaccination clinics for children and college-bound teens, plus bike helmet giveaways across Texas. TMA doctors want to help patients prevent disease and injuries in children.

    Vaccination Clinics: TMA’s Be Wise ― ImmunizeSM program has given Texas children and adolescents more than 214,000 shots since the program began in 2004. Vaccines protect children and can potentially save lives. August is National Immunization Awareness Month, and kids need their shots before heading back to school. Also, Texas law requires meningococcal vaccination for college admission. The Be Wise clinics will offer the vaccine for children through age 18, along with other required vaccinations for school. (Some also will offer the vaccine to patients over age 19, but payment varies by clinic location; check with the local event sponsors for details.)

    Hard Hats for Little Heads events: TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads program promotes safe exercise and encourages helmet use for sports on wheels: biking, inline skating, skateboarding, and riding a scooter. TMA has given away more than 125,000 helmets since 1994. Studies have shown properly worn bike helmets can prevent up to 85 percent of brain injuries.
