POEP Helps Physicians Detect Breast Cancer Early

One in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, and primary care physicians should be prepared to be their patients’ first line of defense when it strikes. Fortunately, TMA’s Physician Oncology Education Program (POEP) provides assistance to physicians with a state-of-the-science CME course for the early detection of breast cancer.

Breast Cancer: Early Detection and Control is a comprehensive, interactive CD-ROM for primary care physicians that covers risk factors, screening, diagnosis, staging, treatment, and case studies. This fully referenced course offers up to 2 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 credit and enhances the learning experience with animated graphs, professional narration, and video clips demonstrating clinical breast exam and stereotactic core biopsy. Case studies provide the viewer with actual mammography X-rays and self-tests to determine the best course of action for each case.  John J. Costanzi, MD, Austin oncologist, says, “Primary care physicians completing this course will walk away knowing everything needed to make an early diagnosis if breast cancer occurs in one of their patients.”

This interactive CD-ROM was produced by POEP, in conjunction with TMA, the Texas Cancer Council, and the Texas Department of Health. The CD-ROM operates in a PC environment and is available to Texas physicians for $45; out-of-state orders are $70. To order Breast Cancer: Early Detection and Control or contact POEP at (800) 880-1300, ext. 1672 or (512) 370-1672.
