After three years of uncertainty, it is settled: Humana will continue administering TRICARE managed care benefits in Texas. The Department of Defense (DOD) has awarded Humana its “T-3” (third generation) contact for the South Region, starting in April 2012.
Humana has been administering TRICARE benefits in the South Region since 1996 but in 2009 lost out to UnitedHealthcare for the newest contract, which originally was supposed to begin the following year. After delays and continuous protests by Humana, however, DOD reviewed its decision and awarded the contract to Humana.
Practices can continue to submit their TRICARE claims as usual; no interruptions in claims processing and payment are anticipated. A caveat, however: UnitedHealthcare has filed a dispute to the reawarding of the contract to Humana. You should monitor the UnitedHealthcare website for updates.
The T-3 contract aims to improve clinical quality and disease management, while offering contractors such as Human incentives for cost efficiencies and excellent performance.
