A patient-physician relationship exists when a physician chooses to serve a patient's medical needs, generally by mutual consent between physician and patient (or surrogate). Contractual in nature, a relationship is voluntary and created by either expressed or implied agreement. After decades of public outcry regarding the underassessment and treatment of pain, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and other regulatory agencies have called for better assessment and treatment of pain. This monograph, developed in collaboration with the Texas Pain Society, reviews the basic principles of pain medicine with a focus on pragmatic clinical approaches to optimal assessment and treatment of patients with a variety of conditions.
