Statement by Texas Medical Association President C. Bruce Malone, MD, on passage of House Bill 274 by Senate State Affairs Committee.

“The physicians of Texas encourage our state senators to pass HB 274. This is an important liability reform that will be good for patients and their physicians.

“HB 274 would discourage the filing of obviously frivolous lawsuits and encourage more efficient and speedier resolution of most claims. This would be another blow against ‘jackpot justice’ in Texas. It also would allow our courts to focus on those patients who bring truly meritorious claims to trial.

“We encourage state senators to move quickly to approve HB 274 and send it to Governor Perry to sign.”

TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 45,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 120 component county medical societies around the state. TMA's key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
