Practice Retention of Medical Records

Several factors may affect time requirements for retaining medical records. These factors include: expansion rate of records in the practice, space available for storage, volume of post-active uses, statutes of limitation and other regulations, and costs of alternatives.

Health information professionals can research the needs of the practice and recommend retention periods based on the previously listed factors. The growth rate of records will determine how quickly available space will be consumed. Professionals may find the following storage modes helpful as records expand: remote storage, microfilm, commercial storage, optical discs, or other storage mediums.
