Topic HIT: First-Year Participants: Deadline to Attest to Meaningful Use for the 2014 Medicare EHR Incentive Program
Background Physicians who are first-year participants in the Medicare EHR Incentive Program must attest to meaningful use no later than Oct. 1, 2014, to avoid the 2015 Medicare EHR penalty.

Consequences A 1-percent penalty begins Jan. 1, 2015, for physicians who are not meaningful users of certified EHRs. The last year physicians can become participants in the EHR Incentive Program is 2014.
Next Steps Register to participate in the Medicare or Medicaid EHR Incentive Program: https://ehrincentives.cms.gov/hitech/login.action. You can begin collecting meaningful use data on your encounters for the 2014 payment year on Jan. 1, 2014. Data should be collected for a consecutive three month period.
