Topic HIT: First-Year Participants: Last Day to Begin the 90-day Reporting Period for the 2014 Medicare EHR Incentive Program
Background Physicians who are first-year participants in the Medicare EHR Incentive Program must attest to meaningful use no later than Oct 1, 2014, to avoid the 2015 Medicare EHR penalty. This means they must begin their 90-day EHR reporting period no later than July 1, 2014.

Compliance Date 7/1/2014
Consequences A 1-percent penalty begins Jan. 1, 2015, for physicians who are not meaningful users of certified EHRs.
Next Steps Register to participate in the Medicare or Medicaid EHR Incentive Program ​if you haven't done so already: https://ehrincentives.cms.gov/hitech/login.action. You can begin collecting meaningful use data on your encounters for the 2014 payment year on Jan. 1, 2014.
