Topic Medicare: Revised and Clarified Place of Service Coding Instructions for Medicare
Background The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued revised and clarified Place of Service (POS) coding instructions. The instructions establish that for all services – with two (2) exceptions – paid under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, the POS code that the physician and other suppliers need to use is the same code used for the setting in which the patient received the face-to-face service.
Regulating Body CMS
Compliance Date 4/1/2013
Consequences Failure to file claims with the correct POS code may result in denials or incorrect payments.
Next Steps Verify that your billing staff are aware of this change and that they are making appropriate changes to comply with the requirement.
