Topic E-Prescribing Penalties. File 10 e-prescribing claims to avoid a 2% Medicare penalty in 2014.
Background The Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA) created an e-prescribing reporting incentive that pays successful electronic prescribers a percent of Medicare billing. Incentive payments vary by year and as of 2011, penalties are in place for those who do not particpate.
Regulating Body Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
Compliance Date 6/30/2013
Consequences Physicians must submit at least 10 e-prescribing claims by June 30, 2013, to avoid a 2% Medicare penalty on Jan. 1, 2014.
Next Steps 1) Adopt a qualified e-prescribing system. This can be a stand-alone system, an electronic health record (EHR) system, or a qualified registry. Visit www.surescripts.com for a list of approved systems. 2) You do not need to sign up to participate —simply submit the e-prescribing G-code, G8553, on your claim form to indicate participation. 3) Visit TMA's e-prescribing resource center (below) for a list of qualified e-prescribing codes.
